*NOTE* Our son's room is being remodeled, some folks have questioned it. We had to leave it as is to be able to tow it down the road. In the summer we plan to raise the roof, (in spite of his objections, he loves it the way it is).

*FairCompanies is a blog that focuses on sustainability, and highlights efforts to promote sustainability. We were honored to have Kirsten Dirksen tell our story. Our reason for choosing this lifestyle is tha we want to have money for our priorities. As a family we have determined that we want to travel (and so have a two month trip to the Dominican Republic planned for the end of the year), and we want to be available to help in case of natural disasters. I have friends that sold homes and moved to Louisiana when Katrina Struck, and we want our son to know how to help others.

Your family is really inspiring me to shed myself of so much stuff and keep only what is most needful...I am disabled and my goal is to have only what I can manage....I love your little home. It's wonderful...blessings
I see that you deleted my comment about the contradictory lifestyle. An intelligent, thoughtful discussion about sustainable living and our impact on the world could have been a more useful option.
I love your tiny house! I really liked getting to see all of it in a video tour. I think all of us could do without so much excess. Do I really need 1400 square feet for myself? No...I would do fine with 320 square feet. I think it's not about how much you have but what you do with what you do have. I think your home is very inspiring. I'm going to share this today on my blog. I try my best to live debt free because debt freaks me out. Good for you to have a tiny cute house completely paid for. I am interested in how your add on to the roof will look. I can imagine how your son would love it up there but as he gets older ... he'll probably want some head room. ha!
I believe we all need to think about how much stuff we accumulate, and how we spend our time. So many in blog world are creative and inspiring, however, many spend all the creativity on themselves, showing no interest in giving back to communities with their creativity, or sharing their skills with the needy. It would be refreshing to see some of these creative people donate their time to a shelter to decorate a kids room for those less fortunate, or work on a classroom for a teacher at their children's school. Both of which would really be appeciated. I rarely see this in blogworld and yet I love all the creative ideas and things people come up with. Over the years, I have found that using my creativity to make others happy has been the best and most efficient use of my time. I really applaud your choice to put your effort into your creativity, and time into each other, over stuff. I would like to see many live a more simplistic life, (including myself), like yourself, and buy products from small companies like yours, instead of made in china junk from those huge chain stores, (who we all know do not have the best reputation for treating its employees well, or in how it treats workers overseas). It takes a lot of courage in our materialistic society to make the choices you have made, I can't say I am where you are yet, but I have simplified what I have considerabally, and would love to eventually live in smaller square footage. I rarely buy a thing unless it is a present and then I usually go local, or small buisness. It is worth it to know my money is helping someone in my community and to get quality gifts. Thanks for your choice to live simply. What is that quote, "Live simply so that others can simply live". Love that!
I featured you today...
Your home is lovely and your story is so inspirational. I live in a small house that I love, its what we can comfortably afford. I have had family encourage us to size up and become annoyed when we didn't So I understand your reluctance to tell people about your choice. I applaud you for living true to your values. I'm following now, I'm so intrigued with your journey.
I featured your story this past week and I now just discovered you have a blog too! Your story is inspirational- God bless your family and your efforts to return to the missions field.

I stumbled across this blog and I was really excited because this is something that my husband and I would absolutely love to do! Also, as I was looking through the posts I saw your books in your office and I got even more excited! You are a great example of simplifying your life!
Thank you, Liz! You are a 'no-reply' blogger, so I cannot e-mail you. If you read this, send me your e-mail! :-)

I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart! I have never heard of tiny home or the concept of them before seeing the video of your home recently posted. I have felt like my world is crowding in on me and my family. As a single Mom in the process of starting my own company to spend more quality time with my son, your story is a true inspiration to me. Like you, I homeschool my son, while working full-time, going to bible college and just living. We are now in the process of looking for a small parcel of land so we can build our own tiny home and life a more sustainable and eco friendly life. (Chickens, veggie garden, fruit garden, etc) I wanted to thank you for the glimpse into a new world, where our things will no longer own us.
Gratefully yours,
Carey
I think y'all are wonderful and inspirational. I showed hubby your video and he saw how serious I was about living like this. Thanks for inspiring us. Much <3.
Wow.
Totally impressed.
I'm off to browse to see more.
Your house is awesome. I don't think your business conflicts in any way with this lifestyle. As humans, we all consume to live. The tiny house lifestyle is not about not consuming, it is about choosing your surroundings with care. That is what your business seems to be about, too. I think they complement each other well. Congratulations on making your dreams reality.
Thank you :-)
Oh! I can't wait to see more videos, Debra! I love your blog. Please continue to post and share!!! :o)
I am very impressed with your home! Also, the lot you guys live on is very lovely. You didn't talk much about outdoor living or if you have much outdoor furniture like a picnic table. It seems like that would really add to your living space - enjoying your cute porch and the surrounding yard. Firepit? Hammock? My biggest concern living like that with my husband and kid would be having - ahem - personal time with my husband. Other than that issue, I think your lifestyle looks just about perfect. Congrats!
Debra,I absolutely love your home and your lifestyle!I am a single mom who works full time with 2 teenage children.I'm very seriously considering downsizing to a home like yours and I was wondering if you might be able to share with me the name of the company that your family went with for your home so I can get more information.Any other information that you might be able to give me on things that have worked for your family would be wonderful too:)Thank you, have a blessed day!Natalie Coe
