I made laundry detergent this morning – it took about 5 minutes. This is the BEST soap, the clothes turn out SO WHITE, I love it! My beautiful sister, Sarah Vines makes and sells all types of natural products, from the most wonderful hair shampoo and (oh my goodness, I ADORE this stuff) hair conditioner, also DRY LAUNDRY DETERGENT, and body soap here:

and the recipe:
1 Bar of Ivory Soap
2 c Washing Soda
2 c 20 Mule Team Borax
50 drops of essential oil (optional)
The Washing Soda (2.50) has 54 ounces, and the Borax ($3.00) has 72 ounces, so this is very inexpensive, but superior to any store bought detergent.
Step 1: Shred the Ivory into 1 quart of water. Dissolve over low heat, about 30 minutes.
Now dissolved:
Now, add 2 gallons of water, the washing soda, borax, and dissolved ivory. Stir with a slotted spoon or whisk. It will get thick and gel-like.
You can stir in the essential oil if you want fragrance to your detergent (but make sure it's essential oil and not just fragrance). Either put a lid on the bucket, or pour into other containers. Use as much of this as you would of any other detergent.
I put it into milk jugs, but if you have curious babies, toy might want to do something different:
Again, the recipe:
1 Bar of Ivory Soap
2 c Washing Soda
2 c 20 Mule Team Borax
50 drops of essential oil (optional)
Shred the Ivory into 1 quart of water. Dissolve over low heat, about 30 minutes. In a 3 gallon bucket (consider one with a lid unless you have 2 - 3 large detergent containers to put it into), add 2 gallons of water, the washing soda, borax, and dissolved ivory.

I've been making my own laundry soap for about a year now. I love it, sure wish I had known about this years ago. I use a slightly different recipe. I use fels naptha instead of ivory and I add 2 cups of baking soda and I use it dry. It's great isn't it? It saves a lot of money too which is always great.
I've been thinking about making some of the dry kind. I am off to check out your sister's products, since I'm into all natural stuff myself. Love your blog! 8-)
Hmmm...I wonder if this would work in my HE washer. I may give it a try.
oh my gosh, thank you! This is a definite for me! Do you have to go anywhere special to get the borax? or just at the grocery store?
Love your blog! Your family is so inspiring. I've made this twice now and it works great. I did use Zote instead of Ivory but I don't think it makes much difference. I'm switching to this laundry detergent recipe next time because it's vegan. Here is the link if anyone is interested. http://www.ehow.com/how_7868343_homemade-vegan-laundry-soap.html
Does anyone know if this is "safe" for front loaders?
This is a wonderful recipe, I've used it as well. Debra, could you please contact me at fivecoat@ozarkmountains.com I couldn't find your email address anywhere. :) Thanks.

how much do you add to each load of clothes?
WOW!!! Awesome. I may have to try this. Thank you for sharing. :)
Oh, this is a wonderful idea! I cannot wait to try it out! :) I love that you can add essential oil to it to, and make it smell like anything you want it to! :) Thank you for sharing the recipe for this.
I hope you are having a good week!
Blessings,
Jenni
