Fence Panel Walkway

Look at what I did!  I am so proud of my self…….

Last winter we battled mud and grime for months.  I needed a cleaner way to get from the house to the work shop.  One night, while asleep (does anyone else do this?) I solved our problem.  Here is what I did:

I took three fence panels from Lowe’s, 8 x 6 feet @ $42.00 each.

I screwed 6 treated 2 x 4’s on the back running parallel with the boards that were already there.  Sorry – I did not get a photo of that.  I only used 12 long screws since I planned to take them out after I screwed each fence board into the 2 x 4’s from the opposite side.  I then flipped the fence panel over and went to work.

Since I am a girl, and I am not afraid of what any MEN think – I stood all the screws up first with a tap of the hammer.  I then went back and quickly screwed them in with a drill.  Awesomely easy.

But to make straight cuts, I screwed a ‘guide board’ into the top of the panel, and then cut the panels into two foot wide sections:

For any MEN who may be checking out my saw…..I got this one at a garage sale.  The previous owner had cut through the electric cable, and pieced it back together.  I did not do that Smile  Here are the cut sections:

Next, I placed them in position, and stained them with my favorite Espresso colored deck stain.  Now I have my walk way!  The best part – except for the fact it was 11 degrees outside, it reminded me of a vacation at the beach, walking on the boardwalk.   Sweet memories.

Now, to cover that trailer tongue….any ideas?

I need a load of mulch….and a few frowlies (my baby sis’s word for flowers – I like starbellies too – strawberries)

How many of you come up with great solutions for problems in your sleep?  What were they?

Update:  Lori, an amazing designer, did THIS for me:

I can’t wait to do this!  Thank you, girlfriend!  I can just see all my foster kitty’s sitting here soaking up the sun.

Just copy and paste the link in your browser. It shows what I did in photoshop to cover the trailer tongue. I would have put the photo right in with my comment, but it wouldn't let me do that.

No ideas for me during my sleep, but sure wish that was the case. Good job on the walkway!

Just wanted to say that I think its amazing that your family can happily live in this smaller space. My family lived in an RV for almost a year and it was very hard for us to give up our private spaced and areas but we did what we had to to survive. You are truly an inspiration> :)

you could always have a welder weld off the tongue...but then again, it might be a removeable one (see if it's bolted on).
And in case you ever have to move, (which I doubt you plan on doing since there are add-ons built on to the original) the same welder can reweld the tongue back in place. I did that to a 14' x 72' mobile home and it worked just fine!
You could also plant the evergreens directly into the ground and in a few years time it would cover the tongue, they might get too large for your containers. Planting directly into the ground would be better for them, then you could utilize that entire area for annual plantings too! Give it more of a cottagy feel.
