My kitchen update took a little longer than expected…..

Hey all!  I apologize for not posting sooner.  I promised a kitchen update…but life got in the way.  The kitchen update will be for next week.

You know how I have been talking about raising our son’s room FOREVER?  There is a lot of emotional baggage associated with this project….. Parents always doubt the wisdom of their choices.  I did not want to wait this long to give him his room.  And while I have tried to completely to avoid the ‘victim’s mentality’, the truth is, we have had a very hard time getting any extra pocket change to do much around the house since my husband lost his job.  For the record, things have loosened a lot, He is driving a school bus, and I teach English over the internet to Korean kids two nights a week, in addition to our business.  We are living comfortably now, from paycheck to paycheck.  Life is great!  It used to be very uncomfortably, from paycheck to paycheck.

          Winking smile

Two weekends ago our wonderful friends and family gathered to do an old fashioned  barn raising.

I apologize for the grainy photos, my sweet niece had to learn on the fly how to use my camera.  For today I give you this:

What is so great about this photo – my brother-in-law was determined to salvage as much as he could of our house, and reuse it.  He had spent time doing Katrina Relief work, and the building material waste from the disaster deeply impacted him.  So, he devised a way to cut the roof off, keeping it intact, and then slipping the pre-built walls into place while we held the roof steady – no freaking out here folks – the roof was braced into place, we just steadied it while he nailed it.  The man is a genius, my sister got the winning lottery ticket

And the sweetest photo yet; our son.  See him in the orange tee?

He has NEVER complained about his loft bedroom.  To this day he insists it was great fun, and that he did not mind.  What a great kid.

His room is now closed in, he has two windows, it has been sheet rocked.  We will be working on it over the next couple of weeks, updates to SLOWLY follow!

Hello Debra! We are also in the process of simplifying and down-sizing our life so I've been following your blog with great interest.

Good luck with your roof-raising. It looks good so far. I'm sure it will be worth all the trouble.

I read that you teach English over the Internet! That's fascinating. Would you write a little about how that all works?

Thank you, and thank you for your inspiring blog!
Joanna

Oh, I can't wait to see more pictures and videos, Debra!!! Please share more when you can! I'd love to see another walk-through video tour, as you've made so many changes since the first one with Fair Companies. I am praying for your family. I'm glad things are getting easier for your family. Hugs.

Oh, thank you both so much! I will do a post on the internet teaching. It has been another blessing, maybe others could benefit from the info.

I am working on another video with Kirsten Dirksen of Faircompanies, until then I will work on little snippets, don't want to spoil her work :-)

Absolutely LOVE it! You know, a stained glass window on hinges would look really lovely in your son's view into the kitchen. Your home is so great! I can't wait to see more pictures and the new video!!

I would love to hear more about the teaching on the internet, also. And, I agree about the stained glass window. That would be wonderful! I enjoyed seeing the pictures and reading about your son's room. It is such a blessing to have a son who is satisfied with what he has.

Wow it looks fantastic! Can't wait to see the updates as I'm curious to see how does one cut off a roof? Genius!! I love your home as well.

WOW, you are a great Mom (and you husband a great Dad) to do this for your boy! Don't worry about it taking longer than you wanted it to... your son will appreciate all the more! Can't wait to see some more photos!
Best,

Deborah it looks amazing! You have such a wonderful family, and friends to pitch in like that! What a blessing!
I'm sure your son will look back with fond memories of his little loft, and now that it's an entire room, it's a place to grow with him. So happy your Hubby found something, and how cool to teach English over the internet! I think everyone is pretty much living pay check to pay check, but not everyone is as happy as you and yours, xoxo tami

I love the downsizing. Families were so much closer when stuff didn't matter more to them. Thank you for your blog!

Hi Deborah,

Your son's room turned out perfect and reallly transformed into usable space. What a difference. I was wondering, do the measurements still fall under the Park Model parameters? What are the final measurements; Overall height of structure, ceiling height of son's room, and height of ceiling underneath room?
Thanks for sharing!
