I wish I could express how we feel, how our life has changed. We are going on three years now! My son is a well balanced, happy kid who has plans for the future (that do not involve weighing himself down with heavy payments). He sees the benefits of living simply. Benefits that range from having parents who are truly present, to a tangible basketball game that can break out at any moment during the day.
I sleep so peacefully.
Well, his room is not completely finished, but we finally got the stripes painted on my son’s room. These are his idea, I think they look great, cozy up the space a bit. You can read about how we raised the roof here: http://www.320squarefoothome.com/2012/02/sorry-so-sorry.html
The water color on the wall was painted by my amazing sister-in-law, Janis Wylie. She also did the paintings in the living room and my bedroom, but this one is special because it is of my husband when he was my son’s age. It was a beautiful gift to warm up his room.
A shameless plug: You KNOW where he got the minky bedcover
He has a fire escape ladder under his bed, and KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!
Along with a few choice belongings.
And a little more storage space on these shelves I built (it took a tube of caulk to hide the terrible craftsmanship, but hey, it was FREE!)
This little blue cabinet hides all his game systems……all the wires except one are hidden…..I will fix that too, someday.
And Finally, a video to give it context.
and, for those who have asked, here is an exterior shot:

This is amazing!!! I love small spaces, I always tell my husband even if we won the lottery I'd still choose a small space:) Your son is a lucky young man!
love it!
It looks great! Can't believe you live in such a small space! Very inspiring! :-)
Xo,
Shellagh
I couldn't figure out what room you were in when you filmed the clip of the nate berkus show! I could see a little bit of stripe walls but couldn't figure it out! I have now put it together! Great job with the room. You have amazing decorating talent!

This is spectacular, and excuse me? Don't be talkin' down the ever faithful caulk gun! Don't mess with any of my guns-- glue, staple, caulk-- because wow! You did some great work in that room with your gun! Really marvelous.
Wonderful space for your son...I just love your little cottage...so cute and cozy indeed...blessings
I love the way your son's room turned out - great job. I always love to see when you have a post - so much fun! Love the idea of down-sizing, but you're right isn't so "simple" to simplify. Always in the back of my mind. Keep up the good work Sis. Especially like that your son sees the sense in your life choices ;)
It looks great! I think about a smaller house often, but our house is special because my great grandfather built it. I don't think I would leave it unless someone else in the family would live in it.
What a fantastic Room! I was drooling over the floors! You and your family are such an inspiration! I first learned of your blog while searching for a small cottage and inspiration for a relative, and I am ever so grateful. Keep up the good work! And Max's room looks so gorgeous with the grey and red.
You did an awesome job, but how did you get that dresser and bed in there? The opening for the ladder doesn't look that big.
Thanks :) We love it here. To get the dresser up....wow, I WISH I had gotten that on camera. The dresser is actually a permanent fixture, never to leave this room, ever. We lifted it up while the roof was off, and then built the walls around it. Pretty cool, I think. As for the bed, it is made of 2 x 4's, and the mattress is a foam mattress that we squished into a roll and pulled through the window. It worked!
Fantastic! I would be interested in see knowing how you keep clutter down. How you keep yourself in check when you go shopping. Also I would love to see pictures of how the house looks during different seasons (ie., Fall, Halloween, Christmas, etc.)and how you are able to store stuff.
Your tiny house is adorable! I've seen the other spaces too, and I love the decoration. Wonderful and very inspirational work :)
I am in love with the colour of the outside of your house. How beautiful!! Seriously gorgeous!
I've just had to scroll up again to have another peek! Lucky you!

One question....How did you get the dresser into the room?
Oops Sorry I should have read other comments. Great job on the house.
I just read up to date on your blog, the title alone caught my attention (when I bought my rent-to-own steel shed,288 sq ft,I had ulterior motives of making it into a tiny home later ;) :p )-ok,I skipped the entries not pertaining to the house itself (embarrassed smilie insert here),but I thoroughly enjoyed the journey you've shared here,it's an inspiration to my Wife and I. LOVING Max's room! I was thinking similar for our kids (daughter 15 and son 10),feeling like my 288 sq ft plan is a bit small however...maybe when I pay that one off and we actually find some land to build it on (or clear off the burned house on some land I own elsewhere),but another, slightly smaller and make a mini-doublewide out of it,LOL!
Anyways, just wanted to say thank you for sharing your journaey here,it's an inspiration :)

(not a shameless plug, but you can see what will be our tiny home here- http://smalldreamer73.wordpress.com/ -whoops,I need to add pics of it there, give me an hour,LOL!)
I was fortunate enough to drive by the 320 Square Foot Home today and stopped by to ask if it was a shipping container house (because I plan on building one.) Debra is a kindred spirit because she said, 'I love showing off my little house.' I was truly impressed with its style (although not MY style) and what was done with 320 square feet of living space. I will never live in a McMansion - because it's simply not necessary.
I am here because of your small house video....i applaude your choice to live simply....you own your life, it doesn't own you, right!
Looking forward to keeping up with your posts, for now, I'll browse through your older posts.

I'm just fascinated by your life in a small house. I've been attracted to this for a while now and I hope in a few years to be able to do this too. I love that you have a studio next to your house because I'd need to do that also for this to work for me.
I look forward to following your blog in the future and I thank you so much for sharing your small house with us. ;0)
How big is Max's room in terms of _feet by _ feet? We are looking at a tiny plan and I am trying to give my daughter a visual for how big her room would be. I love the new video! The changes you made with the bathroom were fantastic - truly makes it more functional for more people. I can't wait for your next post :-)
-Liesl
Hi Liesl, his interior room dimensions are 8 x 10. It feels very large, especially compared to what he had before, hehe. THAT is the true secret to having a grateful child :)
Wow! That is not very much smaller than her room now which is 10x9! I don't think we will need much convincing! It is a great room!
You inspire me! I was so moved by this video that I shared it with my college students and we had an amazing discussion after viewing it.
Personally, my husband and I are both small business owners and this has been a wonderful life change for me after 10yrs in the school system. However, I started to worry about how we could possibly start a family without giving up our businesses and our dramitcially improved quality of life which includes more quality time together! My husband is a personal trainer and I have an Etsy shop and teach part time at community college because I love it.
But, your video proved to me that we don't have to run out and get jobs or move to a bigger apartment or less desirable neighborhood! I have spent hours rethinking our space and we have a totally doable solution right where we are. Which includes your "guest room" for grandparents:)
"I have all that I need." You say that often and it is a reminder to the rest of us. Thank you for sharing!
Sincerely,
Katrina
Max's room looks so cute!
